The Best Rooted & Not Rooted Ad Blockers for Android

(Listed by: not rooted or rooted, for both not rooted and rooted, browser-specific and inside applications)

How many times have you been browsing on your phone and annoying ads pop up? Well, don’t worry. There’s a way to get rid of those ads on your Android device – just use one of the best Ad Blockers for Android listed below (we have updated the list for 2019).

First, you need to know whether your phone is rooted or not because different Ad Blockers exist for either situation or both. So how can you figure that out? If you just purchased a new phone, it will not be rooted because all phones that come straight from the manufacturer start out non rooted.

A rooted phone allows you to create special configurations and put multiple operating systems on the phone. Rooted phones are generally used by experts who want to have more control over the applications on their phones. To check whether you have a rooted phone, get the Root checker app in Google Play. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&hl=en

Once you change from a normal non-rooted phone to a rooted phone, you lose your warranty on the phone. You can also turn a rooted phone back into a non-rooted phone and sometimes you can still use the warranty.

Best Document Scanning Apps

September 11, 2019 By Aurelio

Best 7 Document Scanning Apps for Android

Just a few years ago, if you wanted to scan any sort of documents, you needed to have a physical scanner in order to get the scan you needed. The scanner is a peripheral device for your Mac or PC, and as it not needed very often, and most people would not like to buy one unless it was really necessary. Instead, they get their documents scanned at Internet cafes which maintain dedicated scanners. And with a minimal fee for each scan, it is usually an “okay” choice. Unless of course you don’t live anywhere near a store that has the service.

Today, say good bye to these hassles as the Android smartphones and tablets have some dedicated scanning apps in the Google Play Store along side all the other great Android apps there. With the smartphones coming with quad-core processors and very powerful cameras, creating scanning apps is now a cake walk for developers. So instead of buying a scanner for a one time job, we have compiled a list of scanner apps for you so all you’ll need to do is choose the best one for your needs, download it and start scanning.

And although these apps aren’t recommended for 3D printing, these 3D sketching apps are perfect for that.

Best Scanning Apps

1. CamScanner:

CamScanner is the best among the document scanners for Android. By merely taking a photograph of your document and selecting the cropping tool, the edges of the paper are auto-detected and aligned correctly by the app. It also has auto-adjustment features to compensate for bad focusing and low-light conditions. The app is also directly integrates with Dropbox and Google Docs. You can also convert the scanned picture into JPEG format or into PDF format. It’s free for the basic user, but they do have some great paid for options for those of you that do a lot of scanning and also want to store or have backups of all of your scans. The pricing starts at $4.99 a month, but you get quite a lot of storage for the money.

2.Document Scanner:

Document Scanner scans the documents into a PDF format directly. The user-interface is not as friendly as that of CamScanner, and the cropping tools are not polished as well. Apart from the integration with Google Docs, Box.net and Dropbox, it also supports Evernote which is a nice addition. It comes as a trial version which lasts up to seven days, so if you have one or two scans you ned to get done quickly, the trial/free version is fine. After that there is a small fee that is less than $2, so it won’t break the bank.

3. Droid Scan Pro PDF:

The Droid Scan Pro is more or less similar to the above two apps, but there is a minute difference. Once you select the option to take a snapshot of your document, you will be sent out of the app to the phone’s camera while the picture is taken. After that, you will automatically re-enter the app where you left it. I mention this because the first time I did it, it felt a bit strange to me and I was thinking the app didn’t work. The app has decent color and contrast control options as well as the normal cropping and other image manipulating options.

4. Scan To PDF:

Scan To PDF beats all the other apps in terms of user-friendliness of the Interface. It is super easy to use and not so bad to look at either! You will have to press fewer buttons to take a snap as an inbuilt setting starts the camera as soon as you open the app. The image processing capability is excellent even for the snaps taken in low light. The free version can convert an image to PDF, but for slightly more convenient features, you can buy the paid version.

5. PDF Scanner:

If a simple scanning app without any additional cropping features is what you are looking for, PDF Scanner should be the ideal choice. Even the camera has no buttons for image adjustment. By selecting to scan, the simple camera interface with no buttons takes the scan and can also use your phone’s flash when you are in low light conditions. It definitely saves you a lot of time and is super simple. An excellent choice for maybe an older person that has a “problem” with technology?

6. Mobile Doc Scanner (MD Scan):

MD Scan is another great tool that has all the above said features that a scanner ought to have has. One extra benefit it offers you is the Batch Shooting Mode in which it shoots a series of pictures very fast so that you can save all the images for processing into PDFs later. What’s great about this feature is you don’t need to be connected to WiFi or anything to use it and prepare everything. Its integration with Dropbox, Facebook and Google Docs is very smooth and this app makes creating backups easy. Definitely worth a download.

7. Handy Scanner:

Though relative new compared to the above apps, this document scanner is getting good reviews on the Play Store. Although it is not as powerful as CamScanner or MD Scanner, it does the job pretty neatly, and most importantly, it is free to download and use it.

Thanks to Android smartphones have made our lives easier. And if you need to scan your passport, taxes or any other important papers, these apps can do all of that and sometimes more. And some are free, or have a very low cost. Just being free to scan your document anywhere or at any time is a great benefit to these apps. I hope you’ll never need another internet cafe or Kinko’s again!

Free Wifi Apps for Android

July 18, 2019 By Aurelio

6 Free Wifi Apps that Will Tame Your Android’s Connections

We look at six Wi-Fi related applications for the mobile Android platform – and all of them are free. These Android apps can help you discover and analyze nearby networks, create your own Wi-Fi hotspot and manage your Wi-Fi connections.

Wifi Analyzer

wifi analyzer appUse this Wi-Fi stumbler and analyzer when setting up APs, checking channel usage of neighboring APs, troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues and Wi-Fi security auditing.

Viewing the AP list gives you details on each nearby AP: SSID, MAC address, encryption, channel, and signal in negative dBm levels via a graphical bar and text readout. APs with the same identifiers will be automatically grouped. If you’re connected to an AP, you can also see the details of the connection (SSID, MAC, and IP). You can export the AP list and/or take a snapshot of the screens.

There are several more views/tools as well, you can see a list at Routers200. The channel graph shows each AP’s channel and signal. The time graph then shows the history of channel and signal info. The channel rating page gives you recommendations on channel usage. Last but not least, the signal meter view can help you find the APs with a visual signal meter and sound effects.

WiFi Manager

Wifi Manager appWiFi Manager helps you find, connect and manage Wi-Fi networks quicker and easier than using the Android settings. Open the app, and you’ll see a list of nearby APs with their details: SSID, encryption, channel and signal level (via bars, dBm or percentage). You can sort by signal, SSID, or list open APs first. You can also select to see all known APs — to which you’ve previously connected. It also features a Wi-Fi radar view with graphics to help you visualize the channel and signal status of nearby networks.

  • It includes a widget you can add to your home screen that displays connection info for the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to
  • It supports all the 2.4 GHz channels 1 – 11 for the U.S. and up to 14 for other countries. It also supports the 5 GHz band for those devices with a dual-band Wi-Fi radio
  • If you purchase the $1.75 premium package you get a few more features: another widget that lets you switch between networks with a single tap and the capability to set advanced per-network options (description, icon, auto static or dynamic IP address)

There’s only one notable limitation of WiFi Manager. It doesn’t support enterprise Wi-Fi security (EAP/802.1X). However, unless you’re connecting to a corporate network, this shouldn’t be a problem. There is a free option for this app.

Wireless Tether for Root Users

Wi-Fi hotspot or tethering functionality is now included in Android. It can generate a Wi-Fi signal for you to share the cellular Internet connection with a laptop or other Wi-Fi devices. But you might not find this feature if you’re using an older Android OS version or your wireless carrier disables it. However, if you Root your phone you can use an app like this one to get similar Wi-Fi hotspot or tethering functionality. Plus this app also enables Bluetooth-tethering.

In addition to Rooting, this app also requires you to use a kernel that supports netfilter (iptables). So it won’t work on all Android devices.

For most devices, this app will create an ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) wireless network with support of 128-bit WEP encryption. Some devices support creating an Infrastructure wireless network (which is more like a true AP) with support of WPA/WPA2 encryption and lets you control the Wi-Fi transmit power from wherever your devices are.

All devices allow you to set the SSID (network name), channel and more. It supports access-control to allow/deny specific wireless clients similar to the Avast wifi finder app.

WiFi OnOff

This installs a widget that you can add to your home screen. It lets you toggle the Wi-Fi interface of Android on and off with one single click. Thus, you don’t have to navigate to the wireless settings each time. This is great if you regularly turn it on and off, such as to save battery power.

SharesFinder

SharesFinder appThis scans the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to and lists the shares on the network: Windows (SMB) computers and shares, FTP servers, and HTTP servers. For each it lists the IP address, MAC address, SMB name, and vendor name. There is an easy setup guide so you can get running quickly.

In addition to listing the shares, it supports basic connection and file transferring between them and your phone. You can connect to SMB shares as a guest or input a username and password. Then you can then browse, download, upload, create and delete files and folders. For HTTP resources it launches the web browser. For FTP resources it can open a third-party FTP client, like AndFTP.

RouterPasswords

This app doesn’t use Wi-Fi, but is a database of default login info and credentials for more than a thousand routers, gateways, modems and other network devices. Enter the model number or brand, and it will list the login username, password, and protocol.

How to Compress Videos for Mobile Devices

May 20, 2019 By Aurelio

Compressing Videos for Mobile Devices for More Room

As you’re undoubtedly aware, the storage space on mobile devices can be very limited, and in most cases is anything between 16GB to 64GB.

That doesn’t leave you much room to maneuver, especially if you want to store GIFs or video files can often consume several gigabytes as well.

Seeing as storing large video files on mobile devices isn’t feasible, your best option is to compress them.

That can be done in two separate ways, each of which is unique.

Convert the Video to a Codec with Superior Compression

The compression of video files is determined by the video codec that they use.

Some video codecs (especially newer ones) have superior compression, and as such can compress the video file more efficiently to a smaller size while maintaining the same quality.

If you want to use this option there are a few steps that you will need to take:

1. Check the current codec that the video file encoded in with the help of one of the many free tools that are available.
2. Identify a new codec with superior compression that is compatible with your mobile device and has hardware acceleration.
3. Transcode the video to the new codec using a video converter.

Keep in mind that hardware acceleration is crucial, as software decoding on its own is processor-intensive and will require a lot of power. That in turn will consume the battery life of your mobile device quickly if you aren’t careful.

Adjust the Video Bitrate

The other option to compress your video files is to adjust the video bitrate. By lowering it, you will reduce the amount of data the video uses each second, and that will significantly reduce the file size.

Unfortunately while compatibility isn’t an issue with this option – quality is. The more you reduce the bitrate, the more the quality of your video will deteriorate and compression artifacts start to surface.

That is why although technically you could reduce the video file size to any value that you need by reducing the bitrate, in practice it isn’t realistic. After a certain point your video will become unwatchable, which is definitely not what you want.

Because of the risk involved, you should adjust the bitrate gradually and test how it affects the video quality. Ultimately your goal should be to find an acceptable compromise between the video quality and file size.

Conclusion

If you’re ready to compress your video using either method described above, you should first get a video converter. For example you could try Movavi Video Converter, as learning how to convert MP4 to WMV or any other formats is easy – and it will let you adjust the bitrate too.

All said and done between both these methods you should be able to compress your videos so that their file size is more feasible when storing them on mobile devices. Make no mistake you can significantly reduce the file size – so the real question is: How small do you need it to be?

The RecipeTin Eats App is the Next Generation of Recipe Storage

July 6, 2018 By Aurelio

recipe appYou know that big messy folder that’s fallen behind the microwave? The one filled with all those recipe clippings you haven’t looked at since you ripped them out of an old, coffee-stained food mag four years ago? Well there’s now a modern-day solution for storing recipes that actually works – it’s called RecipeTin, and it’s the answer to your recipe clutter.

There have never been so many ways to source recipes: cookbooks, scrapbooks, magazines, newspapers, websites, blogs, e-books, mobile apps and more. And if the way you store them is a disorganised mess, they’re of little use.

RecipeTin is the new app for iPhone and iPad users that’s revolutionizing the way people store and view recipes. It allows you to take pictures of recipes in cookbooks and magazines and store them as an image – unlike some other recipe apps, which make you manually type in all the information. If you’re looking to browse through recipes on the internet for ideas, then RecipeTin’s built-in browser is ideal – you can import a recipe from any website, captured as a PDF.

You also have the option to create your own recipes, and owing to the straightforward data sections (covering servings, prep time, cook time, etc.) and option to add a picture, they appear streamlined with all the other recipes in your RecipeTin. Haven’t taken a picture of the dish yet? You can copy and paste any image from the internet or a document.

And what’s more, RecipeTin seamlessly syncs to all your devices, meaning that if you’ve snapped a recipe on your iPhone while out and about, you can conveniently look at it while grocery shopping, and then view it on the large format of your iPad at home while cooking it later.

The neat, beautiful and easy-to-use interface makes the app a pleasure to use. It has a simple layout and fresh, bright colour scheme. Navigate your way easily through all your recipes, browsing and getting inspiration effortlessly.

Search through your recipes by cuisine, dish type, main ingredients, source and more. You can even create your own categories. For example, you might like to group together recipes for an upcoming dinner party, or perhaps make a section where you keep all of your family’s secret recipes.

If you’ve been diligently compiling your own recipes over the years on your computer, you can import them all in bulk by syncing the app with iTunes.

The other recipe apps out there tend to fall into one of two categories: either they only allow users to painstakingly manually enter recipes, or they only allow users to download recipes from a rigid recipe portal – not letting users to enter their own. The downfall of the majority of these apps is that they do not give the user the amount of freedom that RecipeTin does; for example, they only accept one type of file format. RecipeTin, on the other hand, does it all.

Not only is RecipeTin great for storing your recipes, but it also preserves their file format, meaning you can go into iCloud or Dropbox and access them from any computer.

As one user said: “This is what I had been looking for. I have so many recipes stored in different places – websites, documents on my PC, scrapbooks and cookbooks. Using RecipeTin, I was able to store all my recipes in one place without entering them in manually one by one. With comprehensive category and collection features, I can group recipes in my way and find them easily. I love using the iPad to cook with and having the iPhone with me when I am grocery shopping. This is exciting!”

– Cristina Parker, Sydney, Australia

Although RecipeTin is currently only available on iPhone and iPad, it’s launching on Mac and Windows over the next few months, and will also be available on Android by mid-2014.

For more information, visit the RecipeTin website, at www.recipetinapp.com or watch the RecipeTin Overview Video.

If you’ve never used coupons to get discounts, or you are curious to try using coupons, or you use coupons and want to save even more, here are our 10 favorite coupon apps and a +1 for senior coupons.

HONEY

honey Coupon AppThe HONEY App may win over all the other coupon apps hands down.

Even if you’ve never gone shopping with coupons before, try this and you will never stop. Many people don’t bother going to stores anymore.

Why struggle to find a parking place, stand in long lines and get a headache looking at all the merchandise. Savingadvice recently updated their promo guide, and guess what apps are included?

Online shopping is the way to go these days. And that’s where the FREE coupon app HONEY comes in.

Just download the app for free and a little H button will show up in your toolbar. Now go shopping to your heart’s content.

When you’ve selected an item in your cart, click the HONEY button and the app goes out to the entire ‘net to find any special codes, one-day discounts, and some offers that are not even available to the general public that apply to your particular purchase.

It will immediately give you the discount. Sometimes the discounts are just money-back for your purchase.

But whatever you choose to buy, HONEY will find you the cheapest way to get it.

shopkick

shopkick couponing app

Shopkick gives you points for almost everything you do in a store or online which you can then use to get giftcards. Earn shopkick “kicks” (reward points) just for walking into partner stores, for scanning a bar code on selected products (kind of like a treasure hunt), for shopping with a credit card linked to shopkick, and purchasing listed items then using the shopkick app to turn your receipts into more kicks.

Redeem your kicks for giftcards at major retailers.

Shopkick has some pretty formidable awards: 2018 Award for Marketing (APPY); 2018 Innovator Award Winner (SAMCEDA); Fastest Growing Private Companies in America in 2014 (INC magazine); America’s 100 Most Promising Companies in 2014 (Forbes), Technology Pioneer in 2013 (World Economic Forum).

This is a great way to get and give giftcards for birthdays and other happy events.

Checkout 51

free Checkout 51 app

The free Checkout 51 app works a little differently, but has the same result. Checkout 51 teams up with your favorite brands that offer cash back rewards when you purchase their products.

With Checkout 51, you look at the product offers that are shown each Thursday at 12:00 am. These products will be listed for one week, and then the new products show up the following Thursday.

Your job is to purchase the product – you can buy in a retail store or online, it doesn’t matter.

Upload the receipt and Checkout 51 puts the cash back money in an account.

Once you’ve accumulated $20.00, you can claim the money and Checkout 51 will send you a check.

Even if you are a “coupon groupie” and have other coupons that are valid for the same product, the Checkout 51 payment will be in addition to whatever other discount you have.

This app just works in the US and Canada right now on both iPhone and Android devices.

Really, what can be better than this app?

If you are going to buy the product anyway, why not get a discount on it? Check out Checkout 51!

The app makes a list of all the deals that day at the store. It shows you all the coupon items and lists the prices you will pay.

One negative though…it is NOT a pretty app. Bad enough on a laptop. Worse on a phone.
